The White County Animal Shelter seized at least 40 cats from deplorable living conditions last week.
According to a report in the Sparta Expositor, the felines were rescued from a home in the eastern part of the county last Monday.
The paper reported all of the animals suffer from respiratory infections and eye problems and were found to be living in a residence filled with trash and waste covering the floors.
Officials added many of the cats will require antibiotics and surgeries to recover from their severe medical conditions.
The cost of treating the animals is expected to reach between $4,000 and $5,000.
The White County Animal Shelter has already begun screening adoptive homes for the cats.
At least 20 of the felines have already found permanent homes. For more information on how to adopt the cats or donate to the White County Animal Shelter, visit their Facebook page. *The Sparta Expositor contributed to this report.
