PARIS, Tenn. (AP) - Officers with Henry County Sheriff's Department are riding the school buses as part of a safety initiative.
Sheriff Monte Belew told The Paris Post-Intelligencer that bus-riding officers have been exiting and walking with younger students who have to cross the street at bus stops.
Belew said he also hopes that Operation Safe Bus will help the students become familiar with local law enforcement officers.
In addition to riding in the buses, some officers are following along behind buses in their patrol cars to monitor traffic and catch anyone who violates school bus stop signals.
The operation continues through September.
