Maury County students start school year without air conditioning

COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

For some Spring Hill elementary students it has been a warm start to the school year.

That's because the air conditioning at Marvin Wright Elementary School has been out much of the school year.

Nashville's News 2 Investigates spoke with mother Jennifer Reece, who said her son's first grade classroom is one of the rooms that have been without air conditioning.

"My son has come home every day and says the air is not working in the class. [He will say] ‘Mom, it does work in the hall or the library, but it does not work in the classroom still,'" Reece said, adding, "I've been there for open house, opening day and it is seriously super hot."

Reece said she is concerned about lethargy, and perhaps even sickness because of the hot classrooms

"We have had air quality alerts, not healthy for older people or younger children and they are there all day," she said.

Maury County school officials would not grant Nashville's News 2 access inside the school on Friday.

However by text, a school spokesperson indicated that the air conditioning is working and has been since last week.

While conducting an interview, a secretary for the school director's office called Nashville's News 2's Andy Cordan and confirmed that the air conditioning has been working.

After hearing the news, Reece said she is hopeful the problem has been addressed, but remained skeptical since her son said it was hot in his classroom on Thursday.

Late Friday afternoon, Reece contacted Nashville's News 2 and said the air conditioning had in fact been repaired in her son's room.

County school officials said while the air was out, businesses and individuals donated fans.

School officials added they appreciated all students and parents patience.

The average temperature in the Nashville area this month has been around 89 degrees.
