A woman was found lying on a staircase shot to death outside a south Nashville apartment complex.
Metro police found the woman, who has been identified as Dalia Gutierrez-Sanchez, after responding to a shooting call around 4:30 a.m. Friday at the Longwood Apartment complex on Wallace Road.
According to police, the 43-year-old who worked as a correction officer at Riverbend Prison was approached by the gunman after she parked outside her apartment building.
Police told Nashville's News 2 an altercation between Gutierrez-Sanchez and the suspect occurred before at least three shots were fired. One bullet reportedly went into the side of the apartment building.
One person witnessed the shooting and a couple of other people possibly saw the suspect fleeing the scene, according to police. Police believe the suspect was last seen walking on Wallace Road.
A K-9 unit was called to the complex to track the suspect and followed a trail to a nearby church before it went cold.
Police believe a getaway car could have been parked at the church.
Authorities reported that robbery is a possible motive in the fatal shooting and that Gutierrez-Sanchez's purse was missing.
Police are withholding any suspect description until they learn more information.
Anyone with information on the shooting or the gunman's identity is urged to contact police at 615-862-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
