NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Alcohol appears to have been a factor in Wednesday night's two-vehicle fatal collision in Hermitage.
Metro police said the accident happened just before 10 p.m. on Saundersville Road near General Kershaw Drive.
John Childress, 44, of Mt. Juliet, was traveling north on Saundersville Road toward Wilson County when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a GMC van.
Both Childress and the driver of the van, 40-year-old Enrique Sacco, had to be extricated from their vehicles.
Childress died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Sacco was critically injured and was also taken to Vanderbilt.
Both men were wearing seatbelts, police said.
First responders detected that Childress smelled strongly of alcohol.
His record reflects three DUI convictions in Nashville, two in 1998 and one in 2009.
