LEWISBURG, Tenn. -

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper shot and wounded a suspect Monday night along Highway 431 South in Marshall County.

The suspect, Walter Hicks, Jr., 52, is now in police custody, charged with attempted criminal homicide.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Kristin Helm said Hicks, of Huntsville, was stopped by Trooper Jon Judge and failed to produce a driver's license and gave a false name.

As Trooper Judge attempted to make an arrest, the Hicks fled, dragging Judge a short distance with his vehicle.

During the incident, Helm said Judge opened fire and shot Hicks in the arm.

A road block was set up in nearby Lincoln County where Hicks was apprehended.

He was taken to a local hospital and then by medical helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Hicks was released and charged Tuesday with one count of attempted criminal homicide and one count of evading arrest and booked into the Marshall County jail.

He is being held without bond until a court hearing.

Trooper Judge began his career with the THP in February of 2000 and is currently assigned to Marshall County.

The THP said he suffered only minor injuries and has been placed on routine discretionary leave with pay pending an administrative review of the incident.
