NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The Tennessee State Building Commission met Monday morning to discuss a proposal to renovate the old Tennessee State Prison.
The commission approved $800,000 to hire a consultant to look at how the prison could be used.
The castle-looking building is located off Centennial Boulevard in west Nashville and could also undergo a multi-million dollar renovation.
The prison, completed in 1859, was known as one of the toughest prisons in the country. It closed its doors in 1992 and has been vacant for years.
An injunction prohibits the Tennessee Department of Correction from ever again housing inmates at the facility.
In the decade since its closing a few movies, including "The Green Mile", have been shot in the old building, however repairs and upkeep have been non-existent and it's deteriorating.
Just last year the building was identified as a threatened historical site.
The group, Historical Nashville, is hoping the prison could eventually open as a tourist attraction.
