NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Nashville Mayor Karl Dean believes the city is ready to host several big events with the addition of the Music City Center.
The mayor has gone on record saying Music City could host an NHL All Star game as well as an even larger event that was held in Indianapolis in February.
According to the Tennessean, a national political convention is another event Nashville can add to that list.
The Tennessean asked Mayor Dean and James Davis, the communications director for the Republican National Convention, if the city would be ready to deal with the high costs and headaches of hosting such a large convention.
Mayor Dean says the city is ready.
"We're clearly at a position as a city that we could do it," Mayor Karl Dean said. "With the new convention center, the new hotels coming online, we have the infrastructure to do it, and I think Nashville would have a great appeal.
He continued, "There's an enormous cost involved. It's something that would involve a lot of work but it's something we should be thinking about, and we will."
Davis told the Tennessean that Tampa was expecting close to 50,000 delegates, media members, volunteers, campaign officials and celebrities.
He said Tampa and surrounding cities have already booked over 90,000 room nights for the convention.
