GALLATIN, Tenn. -
Two men were transported to the hospital after the driver crashed into a tree in Sumner County early Thursday morning.
Police responded to the scene just after 3 a.m. along North Wrights Lane at Kansas Lane, north of Gallatin.
A passerby called police after seeing a red Volkswagen GTI in the grass on the side of the road.
When crews arrived, they discovered the men, believed to be in their 20s, trapped inside the vehicle.
Officials told Nashville's News 2 the car ran off of the roadway and hit a tree at a high rate of speed.
Crews had to take the driver's side door off of the vehicle to get to the victims. It took about 10 minutes to free the driver and the passenger.
Responders told Nashville's News 2 the impact of the collision was so strong it pushed the engine into the passenger's seat.
Police said they also discovered one headlight hanging out of a tree about eight feet away.
One of the passengers was flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville while the other passenger was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center. Both victims were being treated for critical, but non-life threatening injuries.
The right lane of North Wrights Lane was shutdown for about 30 minutes while crews worked the scene.
The area was cleared shortly after 5 a.m. and the car towed away.
