DALLAS -

Former Tennessee Volunteer Jason Witten could miss considerable time this season after lacerating his spleen Monday night against Oakland.

ESPN.com reports the Cowboys are calling the injury to their Pro Bowl tight end "very serious."

The small laceration caused bleeding, but it did not rupture, so the spleen has not been removed.

Head Coach Jason Garrett said it's premature to talk about Witten's status for the regular season opener. W

Witten will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days.

Surgery remains possible if he does not improve.
