FRANKLIN, Tenn. -
A store clerk said he is thankful to be alive following an armed robbery in Franklin Monday night.
The incident occurred at Jewel's Market located at 1421 West Main Street around 8:30 p.m.
According to police, the lone gunman physically assaulted the store clerk during the holdup.
Surveillance video shows the masked suspect entering the store and demanding money.
After giving the man cash, the 33-year-old clerk lunges for the bandit's gun before a struggle begins.
During the incident, the clerk comes over the top of the counter and falls to the floor.
When the robber attempts to leave the store as a customer enters, the clerk chases him into the parking lot where a brief scuffle breaks out.
After the gunman escaped, the clerk returned to the store and called 911.
"This type of robbery is incredibly unusual for the area, the fact of the matter is the guy knew what he was going to do well before he went into the store he went in masked to conceal his identity," Lt. Charles Warner said.
The victim was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The at-large suspect is described as a tall, black male in his 40s or 50s.
He was last seen wearing a white South Pole brand hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes.
He also used a black t-shirt to cover his face.
The suspect is believed to have fled the scene in a gray or teal Ford Taurus.
