HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. -

The suspect of an attempted home invasion in Kentucky is in critical condition after he was shot in the face Sunday night.

According to police, around 10:45 p.m., the man showed up at a home in the 600 block of Sanderson Drive off Dawson Springs Road in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and started banging on the back door.

The homeowner was suspicious of the visitor and went to grab his gun.

As he was doing so, his wife opened the door and the suspect tried to force himself in.

Police said the homeowner shot the suspect as he reached for his gun.

The family told investigators they've never had any problems prior to Sunday's attempted home invasion.  Police do not believe the family was targeted.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the face.

He underwent surgery and police said he is expected to survive.

The investigation is ongoing.

No one in the home was injured.
