University says employee stole copies of gay newspaper

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vanderbilt University has identified an employee who is accused of taking hundreds of copies of a newspaper dealing with gay issues.

In a news release, the university said the employee admitted taking copies of Out and About. The issues were found in campus trash bins.

Newspaper Managing Editor Patrick Armstrong told The Tennessean campus police interviewed the woman after security footage recorded her emptying the paper's rack in Light Hall at the university's medical center.

The university statement said police learned of the removals in April, but couldn't investigate because the paper was free.

After the rack was posted with a note that one copy was free and others cost 50 cents each, police acted.

Officials said the incident is under internal review.
