COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -

A former state trooper previously assigned to the Cookeville district was indicted on criminal charges on Wednesday.

Jonathan Reed was indicted for driving under the influence and possession of a handgun while under the influence.

Each of the charges are considered a Class A misdemeanor and carry a possible sentence of up to 11 months and 29 days in jail.

Authorities said the indictment stems from a criminal investigation into an incident that occurred in March.

Reed was terminated from his position in June for "gross misconduct" following an internal investigation.

Reed was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.
