HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -

Fire crews are investigating after flames destroyed a mail pavilion at an apartment complex in Hendersonville.

Emergency crews responded the fire shortly before 5 a.m. at the Waterview Apartments on Waterview Circle.

The fire chief told Nashville's News 2 he could see the smoke miles away.

Responders discovered a United States Postal Service mailbox pavilion was fully involved in flames.

The heat from the fire caused some siding of the complex to melt.

Crews immediately evacuated the apartment complex and had the fire contained within 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.  Fire officials say it is suspicious.

The fire marshal was called in to investigate since the pavilion burned was property of the postal service.

The postmaster will assist in the investigation.

If the fire is deemed arson, the case will be considered a federal investigation.

No further details were immediately released.
