NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Metro police are warning motorists to keep an eye on their license plates and tags after an increase of thefts over the past several months.
According to police, since February the number of stolen license plates has jumped from 15 to 37, while the number of stolen tags has nearly tripled.
"During tough economic times, some people can't afford to get their vehicles re-registered," explained Sgt. Taylor Schmitz
According to Sgt. Schmitz, the most likely places to be targeted by thieves are in busy shopping centers and even in your own driveway.
He added that he recommends for drivers to cut their tags either in strips or in a grid pattern before placing them on their license plates.
"Our goal is obviously by the second little square they peel off, [they] realize they're going to be a little while, [with the] best thing to do is move on," Schmitz said
Police said they also recommend fasteners that can be used on license plates instead of screws.
The device, which retails for around $6, requires a special tool to remove a license plate.
Police said they currently do not have any suspects in the incidents.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
