Texting while walking could be reason behind new laws

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

We've all heard the problems that surround texting and driving, but what about texting and walking?

While it's hard to believe, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says more than 1,100 people wound up in an emergency room for "distracted walking" in 2011 alone.

The primary cause is texting or browsing the Internet while walking.

There are several viral videos online of distracted walkers running into doors, poles and even falling into a mall fountain.

While driving fatalities were down in 2010, pedestrian fatalities grew more than 4%.

When those numbers rose, lawmakers in Delaware responded by putting up billboards that read "Look up. Drivers aren't always looking out for you."

The state is concerned that people will step right into traffic while looking at their phones.

Delaware isn't alone.  Fort Lee, New Jersey is now issuing citations to people who get caught texting and walking.  Then penalty is a stiff $85 fine.

What do you think?  Do you text and walk?  Do you think it's a problem?  Do you think it's dangerous? Should there be laws against it?  Let us know in the comment section below.
