NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Two armed robbery suspects attempted to run from two Metro police officers early Saturday morning but were caught.

The pair took off toward the massive Music City Center construction site after robbing a 25-year-old Mt. Juliet man at gunpoint.

Officers received the call around 3:40 a.m. and quickly responded to a parking lot located on 2nd Avenue South and saw two men matching the description of the robbers.

The two suspects were identified as convicted felons Charles Cheatham, 26, and Laquinte Beard, 31.

Officers said they saw Cheatham running, and as they got closer, heard a gunshot.

Officers ordered the man to stop, and Cheatham complied.

Police found a .380 caliber pistol that was believed to have discharged when it hit the ground.

Officers located Baxter after a brief struggle and took him into custody near 5th Avenue South and Peabody Street.

Beard was carrying the victim's cellphone. The victim's wallet was recovered near 4th Avenue South and Malloy Street.

Police said the man who was robbed identified Cheatham as the man who held the gun on him while Beard went through his pockets and took his belongings.

Cheatham is jailed in lieu of $150,000 bond on charges of aggravated robbery and unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon.

Beard is jailed in lieu of $87,000 bond on charges of aggravated robbery, evading arrest and resisting police.

Both suspects have a criminal record, police said.
