COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

A group of volunteers who are renovating an old fire station in Mt. Juliet discovered black mold during the process.

The building is owned by the city of Mt. Juliet, but is occupied by Wilson County firefighters.

In June, a group of retirees began remodeling Station No. 3, located behind Mt. Juliet City Hall.

During the process, they found mold in two separate bathrooms.

"There was quite a bit of black mold back along the dry wall and along the baseboards," Klaus Sternath told Nashville's News 2.

The fire station was built many years ago and has flooded at least twice.

Volunteers ripped out the mold and bleached the areas where it was found.

City officials said they want firefighters to feel safe so the building underwent a full inspection.

A contractor found mold in the bathroom, likely caused by a leak.

Interim City Manager, Kenny Martin, told Nashville's News 2 the city is working to fix the problem.

"We appreciate it when they bring things to our attention because we want to make it right," said Martin.

Volunteers have added new flooring, countertops, cabinets, appliances and fresh paint.

They plan to finish working on the roof and replacing old furniture by the end of next week.
