NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

For five-year-old Mack Osbourn, it was an eventful first day of kindergarten.

After school let out at 11:30 a.m. the kindergartner boarded the right bus, but got off at the wrong stop. His grandmother Minnie Osbourn waited for him at his bus stop, and became alarmed when he didn't show up.

"I kept waiting at the bus stop and 30 minutes passed by," Minnie told Nashville's News 2. "My friend decided that we needed to call the school."

Minnie said she called officials at Cumberland Elementary, who in turn alerted Metro police.

Police located Mack around 2 p.m. at the Temple Church on Kings Lane, in their daycare facility, safe and under supervision.

Workers at the daycare told Nashville's News 2 he had attended Pre-K at the Temple Church, and was very familiar with the facility.

"He just got off the bus and went to the daycare and was getting ready to have his nap," Minnie said with a chuckle moments after reuniting with her grandson.

"Any time we have a child that's misplaced or we can't confirm a child's location, immediately we notify the police department," said Tony Majors, a spokesman for Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Majors told Nashville's News 2 the bus driver did nothing wrong, and that the school system works hard to be prepared when situations like this arise.

"Some students are starting brand new schools for the first time so we always have to be prepared for the child that doesn't exactly know where their bus stop is or doesn't exactly know what to do when they get off the bus," said Majors.

He urges parents to communicate a clear after-school plan to their children.

"Go ahead and have the discussions early so it's very clear as to who's meeting the child, are they riding the bus, are they a car rider, where are they supposed to get off the bus and what to do once they get off the bus," he said.

Majors said that parents can refer any bus stop or bus routing questions to the district's Customer Service Department by calling 615-259-INFO.
