FRANKLIN, Ky. -
Crews worked for more than five hours to contain a large fire Wednesday morning at the old hospital in Franklin, Kentucky.
The blaze broke out shortly before 6 a.m. at the hospital located at the intersection of South Main and Madison streets.
The entire square in Franklin was shutdown while crews worked to extinguish the flames.
A nearby apartment complex was also evacuated as a precaution.
One resident told Nashville's News 2 firefighters woke her up and told her to get out of her home.
"You hear of it happening, but it just happened to me. I lost everything. No insurance or anything. It's a complete loss," nearby resident Mike Stewart said.
Fire departments from several neighboring communities were called in to assist.
Resident Penny Beach went to see the historic landmark following the devastating fire.
"In fact I lived in a part of it at some point and time. And it's just breaking my heart," she said, wiping away tears.
The blaze was under control by about 10:30 a.m. although crews remained on the scene tending to hot spots.
It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured or what sparked the fire.
The old hospital building has been empty for years.
Franklin, Kentucky is located just over the Tennessee state line, about 45 miles north of Nashville.
