Nashville barber offers free haircuts, school supplies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A south Nashville barber is offering free haircuts Tuesday just in time for the first day of school.

Keith Judkins, owner of Fade Away Sports Barbershop located at 210 Thompson Lane, is giving away free haircuts and school supplies from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to students entering kindergarten through eighth grade.

"It's rewarding," Judkins told Nashville's News 2, adding, "It feels real good just to help provide for small income families."

Judkins enlisted the help of an old high school buddy, Brandon Maxwell, for Tuesday's event.

"I want to give back because I know what it's like to not have things on the first day of school," said Maxwell, who led a church camp in North Carolina this summer.

He challenged the campers to set an example for adults.

They responded to the challenge by reaching into their own pockets to buy school supplies for kids they will likely never meet.

The group raised $450, which was enough to buy supplies for 150 students.

The campers wrote motivational notes to the recipients inside notebooks.

"It's really cool how they can plant the small seed in a bigger story and how they're giving is going to give back to the community here in Nashville, Tennessee," Maxwell said.

Judkins said he hopes Tuesday is the first of many philanthropic efforts at Fade Away Sports Barbershop.

The event continues until 3 p.m.
