NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Technology is making just about anything possible. YouTube is now one of the most popular teachers of sports, home improvement and do it yourself projects.
And one man has found a way to teach a musical instrument through new technology.
If you're thinking about getting the band back together, and a need a refresher course on how to play the guitar, then look no further than Lance Allen.
The best part, you won't even have to leave your room.
Five years ago, Lance discovered the magic of Skype. Now, instead of students coming into his studio, they're connecting.
"We sit in a room and work one on one with a student," Allen said. "And I can reach over, touch their fingers and show them charts."
"I set myself up with a friend in Malaysia, we traded some guitar licks and I thought, I can learn from this," Allen said.
Today, with the help of Youtube and Facebook, Lance has built an online clientele of students around the nation.
Lance's goal is to teach in all 50 states, and he's halfway there, teaching in 25 of them already.
He may not be able to reach out and touch the frets, but the video lesson doesn't end when their time is up.
"I set my students up with a Dropbox, and with every lesson I'll do a video and put it in the dropbox so they can practice."
Allen says he isn't giving up the traditional teaching methods, either. He still has students coming to his studio and he teaches in a public school setting.
Lance charges a little more for the Skype lessons because of the extra videos he provides.
