Parents forced to buy school supplies ahead of tax free weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Tennessee's Tax Free Weekend is scheduled to begin on August 3, however for many parents, the savings comes too late.

Metro students are set to return to class on Wednesday.

Due to the earlier start date, many parents said they will have to purchase supplies such as uniforms and backpacks before the tax-free weekend.

Mother Lindsey McGrady has four school-aged children. The family decided to go ahead and purchase school supplies this week.

"We usually do [take advantage of the tax free weekend], but just having a 6 month old [baby] at home we just decided to get it over with without the crowd," she explained.

Shopper Diana Stewart was looking for a calculator her grandson is required to have.

She told Nashville's News 2 there are some things students have to have before returning to the classroom.

"Things like their backpack, they've got to have that to get in there. Then there's the thing if you get one and it's too big will it fit in their locker, And you won't know that until you get to school."

Last year the Department of Revenue reported Tennesseans saved a total of nearly $10 million.

Local retailer MacAuthority is offering shoppers a way to get tax free weekend prices the week before.

Manager Alex Baskette said, "The pre-order is to guarantee that you get the product it's also to cut down because that weekend is usually very hectic so it guarantees you get a product and you don't have to rush out here and hop in line and wait in line for hours."

Tennessee's tax free weekend kicks off on Friday, August 3 at 12:01 a.m. and will continue through Sunday until 11:59 p.m.
