PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. -

A mail carrier was assaulted by an angry driver while on his rural route this week in Putnam County, according to the sheriff's department.

The 49-year-old postal worker said he was slowing to make a delivery when a truck topped a hill and got right behind his bumper.

According to the report, the driver of the truck stopped, got out and began cursing at the mail carrier before throwing a cigarette at him.

The man also threatened the postal worker and attempted to strike him.

"The driver of the other vehicle stuck his hand through the vehicle window and tried to grab the postal worker or hit him and he leaned forward toward the steering wheel to avoid the guy's reach," Chief Deputy Jacky Farley with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department told Nashville's News 2.

The man was not charged by the sheriff's department because deputies say he never actually touched the postal worker.

"It sounds like a typical case of road rage," Farley said. "I don't know what would cause a person to go off, especially on a postal worker. They're just doing their job."

The case was turned over to federal postal inspectors who met with the driver and warned him if it happened again he would be charged.
