More than 200 volunteers spent time on Thursday sorting school supplies for United Way's annual "Stuff the Bus" event.
The non-profit organization has worked on collecting supplies for local children in need all throughout the summer.
The donated items will help provide more than 3,000 backpacks filled with school supplies.
Melanie Shinbaum of the United Way told Nashville's News 2 it was exciting to watch recipients receive their backpacks last year.
"It was really amazing, their response. It helped them feel loved and appreciated and the teachers here were appreciative as well because their students were excited about that first day instead of being a little scared," she recalled.
This year's backpacks will be distributed to students when they start school next week.
Nearly 10,000 backpacks have been filled over the past four years.
Nashville's News 2's Anne Holt, Bob Mueller, Cory Curtis and Davis Nolan were among the volunteers.
