Dam being torn down on Harpeth River in Franklin

Posted:

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) - Demolition begins Wednesday on the Lowhead Dam on the Harpeth River in Franklin, removing the only barrier on the waterway.

The demolition, by the city of Franklin and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, is designed to improve fish habitat and water quality. It also is expected to improve public access to the river and enhance fishing and paddling.

The $870,000 cost is partially offset by $350,000 in federal grants to the Harpeth River Watershed Association.

The Department of the Interior has named the project as a model of America's Great Outdoors River Initiative to conserve.
