50-foot-deep hole opens in Fairview couple's yard

FAIRVIEW, Tenn. -

A Williamson County couple is left wondering what to do after a 50-foot deep sinkhole developed in their front yard.

The cave-in happened about 40 feet from Dean Parker's home last Thursday.

A family friend rappelled to the bottom of the nine-foot-wide hole and measured the depth at 50 feet.

He also found a couple of underground voids and a six foot tunnel, which runs in front of some neighboring homes.

"If it fell in here and the tunnel is going up toward the road, and there's a lot of traffic on that road what's to say it's not going to fall in up there next," Parker told Nashville's News 2.

It's not clear if last week's rains caused the sinkhole to open up.

The Parkers have asked the county and the city of Fairview to send engineers to advise them about what to do.
