COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) - Columbia Police Chief Tim Potts says he hopes four new Segway i2 patrollers will allow officers to cover more ground more quickly in crime-prone areas.
According to the Columbia Daily Herald, officers are training to use the patrollers, which will soon become part of every patrol shift in the department.
They were purchased for $31,000 through a state grant.
Sgt. Tony Gray said the rovers make officers more accessible and therefore relations with the community are improving.
Potts said the Segways also will be used during events downtown.
The grant requires the city to create innovative ways of fighting crime using prevention, enforcement and offender intervention, the paper said.
