NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The family of a five-year-old drowning victim is taking action.
Keesha Jordan drowned over the Memorial Day weekend while attending a birthday party at a home in Antioch.
Saturday, her family gathered to celebrate her life and raise awareness about the Keesha Campaign.
"We're used to seeing Keesha running around playing, so it's kind of tough," said Ashley McEwen, Jordan's cousin, "but to know that we're doing it for her it makes it better. Every day is a struggle."
Police believe the little girl was under water for several minutes before she was rescued by another child.
A neighbor performed CPR but Jordan did not survive.
Now, through their grief, the family is trying to turn their tragedy into something positive.
"It's like she's living on [and] we feel like she [is] an angel so this is what she would want us to do," McEwen said.
With a focus on water safety, the Keesha Campaign passed out water safety devices for kids at Saturday's event.
"It's kids safety period but because Keesha did pass away from drowning," McEwen said. "We want everyone to know with the summertime and it being as hot as it is. We need you to always be around the kids, never leave them unsupervised, make sure they have the floats, swimming lessons if possible make sure they stay with their head above the water."
McEwen also stressed how important CPR training is.
"So if something happens, not even in water, just outside, with this heat, if something happens then it's important for you to get certified [in CPR]," she said.
The Keesha Campaign hopes to host safety events each month.
