NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A man with numerous theft and burglary charges stretching back decades is accused of using three young children to help him shoplift various items from a Nashville Walmart.

William Franklin Muncey, 46, was arrested Sunday on charges of theft and contributing to the delinquency of three minors.

According to a Metro police affidavit, Muncey was observed by a security guard Sunday afternoon filling a shopping cart at the Dickerson Road Walmart with various items including beer.

The guard told police the suspect walked out of the store and sent two eight-year-olds and a seven-year-old in to push the cart out of the store.

Walmart security stopped the children when they passed the store's sales area, and arrested Muncey, who was observed circling the parking lot waiting for the kids to exit.

The children told police Sunday was not the first time they had been asked by the suspect to engage "in this sort of action," the affidavit stated.

Police did not indicate what the relationship is between Muncey and the three children.

The amount of merchandise in the shopping cart was listed at $574.05.

The Tennessee Department of Children's Service has been called in to assist in the case.

A spokesman for DCS told Nashville's News 2 the children are now in the care of someone described as their mother.

Metro police and Department of Correction records indicate half-dozen convictions on theft and burglary charges for Muncey in Davidson and Williamson County beginning in 1992.

Metro records show arrests and guilty pleas for offense such as larceny and public intoxication that date back to 1985.

On May 30, Metro records also indicated Muncey plead guilty to criminal trespassing.

At the time of his arrest, Muncey had an outstanding warrant on a probation violation.
