CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

Police in Clarksville arrested a local couple Saturday night for leaving their nine-month-old baby alone in a Ft. Campbell Boulevard motel room.

The front desk clerk and a concerned citizen found the child wrapped in a blanket on the bed in the room after no one answered repeated knocks at the door.

According a news release from Clarksville police, the citizen saw the parents leave the hotel without the baby around 8:45 p.m. and called the front desk.

Together, the clerk and the citizen went to the room and knocked on the door.  The clerk opened the door when no one answered.

In addition to the child, they found the room in disarray with empty food cups, trash and soiled diapers.

Police were called and arrested 19-year-olds Robert and Brittany Calles when they returned to the motel about 30 minutes later.

During interviews, police said the parents offered different explanations of why and how long the child had been left alone.

Each parent was charged with child abuse and neglect and booked into the Montgomery County jail.

The child was turned over to the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.
