NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A Nashville woman is offering her secrets and tips to looking younger.
Katherine "Woo" Caroland, 53, is a successful business owner who is often mistaken to be 10 to 15 years younger than her actual age.
"I never think about my age personally. I don't a lot of times. I forget how old I am. I have to go okay here you don't even think about it," she said.
Caroland, who owns Woo Skincare and Cosmetics has access to the best products on the market and has picked up several tricks of the trade.
While working in the industry Caroland and other professionals including personal trainers and plastic surgeons said they advise the clients to following seven simple steps.
1. Too much makeup is a no-no
According to makeup artist Dianna Greco, older women should only use concealer and foundation where they need it.
"As we age and start to develop fine lines and wrinkles, makeup and concealer on the lines and wrinkles can actually make us look older," she explained.
2. Get lots of sleep
"I don't care if you're 15, 40, 50 or 60, [lack of sleep] shows on us very quickly," said Woo, who said she gets at least eight hours of shut-eye each night.
3. Sweat
Woo said she exercises twice a week with a personal trainer and walks on the remaining days.
"After I do work out I feel so charged and ready," she said.
Personal trainer Sarah-Jane Hill added, "She's willing to be challenged and she's willing to cut a sweat and that's what she does right."
Experts also say exercising can relieve pain and stave off illness.
"You gain vitality from [sweating]," said Hill. "You gain energy from it and also the endorphin factor is awesome after 50."
4. Don't overdo the plastic surgery
"You cannot turn [bad plastic surgery] back around," said Dr. Don Griffin, plastic surgeon at Nashville Cosmetic Surgery Center. "It's hard to fix what's been overdone. The key, from the surgical perspective, is just try to make them look the best they can look, but age-appropriate."
5. Dress age-appropriate
Dressing younger than you are can make a woman look older than they really are.
"You shouldn't be trying to look like you're 20," said Woo.
6. Skip the grandma ‘do.
Just because you're over 40, doesn't mean you have hack off your locks.
Choose a style that's flattering for your face.
7. Enjoy everything in moderation
Woo said nothing is off-limits.
"No, absolutely not! Eat cake. Eat chocolate. Have a glass of wine.Beauty comes from balance and happiness comes from balance."
