CHARLOTTE, Tenn. -
Dickson County fire crews have confirmed one death following a fire at a home in Charlotte early Wednesday morning.
The Dickson County Sheriff's Office responded to the blaze just before 2:30 a.m. at the home on Loggins Road in Charlotte off of Van Leer Highway/State Route 49.
A responding deputy told Nashville's News 2 upon arrival the house was completely engulfed in flames and a female resident was outside screaming that someone was inside.
Beatriz Swan lives next door and said the woman ran to her house for help.
"I just heard pounding which scared me because it was so late," said Swan. "She was screaming and it scared me. She told me the house was on fire."
The deputy attempted to enter the front door but was unsuccessful due to the intense flames and heat.
"It was really bad at the time, even my husband got a little bit scorched. The heat was unbearable," said Swan.
Fire crews arrived shortly after and quickly began putting water on the fire. The water had to be trucked in from about a half mile away.
The woman told fire officials two children also lived at the home, but were staying elsewhere with friends Tuesday night.
Investigators confirmed midday Wednesday a 51-year-old man perished in the blaze. His name was not immediately released.
An autopsy is planned.
According to Dickson County Sheriff's Det. Chris Stockman, the female resident was awakened by the fire.
She reported she tried to wake the male victim, who was sleeping in the living room, but was unable to.
The home was a log cabin. It is considered a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Foul play was not suspected.
