Cat alerts homeowner of fire, saves man's life

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

A Franklin man credits his cat for saving his life last Thursday morning after the feline awakened him after his home caught on fire.

Eli Corona told Nashville's News 2 he was sound asleep in his home in the 700 block of West Meade when his cat Hootie, suddenly "began acting crazy" around 3 a.m.

Corona admitted at first he ignored the feline and pulled the covers over his head; however Hootie was persistent and continued to jump on the bed.

"I said, ‘What's going on with that cat?' and I turned the light on and that's when I see my room full of smoke," Corona said.

When he took a look outside his bedroom he saw flames shooting from his back door.

He estimates the flames were seven or eight feet away from his bed.

Corona said he quickly grabbed Hootie and got his roommate out of bed and escaped the burning home.

The men and the cat were not injured in the blaze.

Corona said had he waited a few minutes later, he would have been trapped inside his bedroom.

The American Red Cross provided assistance to the homeowner and his roommate.

The cause of the fire has yet to be released.
