Gregory Andrews, 52, is wanted by Franklin police on charges of theft and criminal impersonation.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -
Franklin police are seeking the whereabouts of a homeless man who stole several hundred dollars from a Franklin church and later used his dead brother's identity when questioned by police.
According to the Franklin Police Department, 52-year-old Gregory Andrews walked into St. Philip Catholic Church on June 17 and stole the money from two donation boxes.
"I'm just surprised that people would do that," church member Janice Wilamowski told Nashville's News 2. "This is such a giving church, both money and food, that all they had to do is come and ask."
Six days after the incident, on June 23, an officer on patrol spotted a man who resembled the suspect.
The man identified himself as John Douglas Andrews. He was questioned by detectives but released.
Further investigation revealed the man is not only the suspect in the theft, but that he used the identity of his dead brother.
Gregory Andrews is now wanted on theft and criminal impersonation charges.
Police said he is homeless and could be driving a green 2000 Chevrolet four-door with Virginia license plate No. XGG 2867.
He is five feet, 10 inches tall, weighs approximately 180 pounds and has the name "Sara" tattooed on his left arm.
