NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Fourth of July celebration ended in gunfire early Thursday morning after bullets struck two people and grazed three others, including a five-year-old girl.

The shooting happened just before 12:30 a.m. on Charles E. Davis Boulevard at Green Street in the J.C. Napier public housing complex in south Nashville.

Metro police told Nashville's News 2 two men dressed in dark clothing walked up to the area and without saying a word, started shooting.

A five-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old man were all grazed by bullets.

One other man was shot in the leg.

All four were taken to area hospitals and have since been released.

Police said a fifth person with life-threatening injuries drove himself to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

Police said it was unclear if that man was a victim or a suspect in the crime.

Captain Ken Walburn explained, "It's a holiday weekend.  Obviously, a lot of people are outside.  Again it goes back to if you see somebody that doesn't belong in the neighborhood and you live in that neighborhood and you think they look suspicious, please call the police department so that we can stop something like this before it happens."

He continued, "Citizen information is integral in our fight against crime [and] to stop something before it happens."

Police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
