A man wounded in a shooting near Madison early Tuesday morning has died from his injuries.
The victim is identified as William H. Stokes, 25, of Chesapeake Drive.
Stokes was shot just after 1 a.m. near the intersection of Patton Hill Road and Village Trail.
Police told Nashville's News 2 he stopped the van he was driving, got out and began talking with people on the street corner when he was shot once in the chest.
Stokes then got back into the van, and a friend who was with him, drove to her residence on Meadow Court where an ambulance was called.
He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died later Tuesday after surgery.
Detectives were told that several people were in the area where Stokes was shot and likely witnessed the shooting.
