Posted: Updated: July 2, 2012 05:41 PM

Suspected drunk drivers who refuse a breath test will be subject to a blood draw under the first-ever "No Refusal" enforcement campaign.

The enforcement period begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, and will continue through Midnight, Sunday, July 8.

It will take place in selected counties, including, Anderson, Bradley, Davidson, Maury and Warren.

The initiative will be enforced by state troopers in those five counties.

"This new tool is an effective way of holding those who make the bad choice of driving impaired accountable," said Commissioner Bill Gibbons with the Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

In Tennessee, there have been 497 fatalities on state roads in 2012.

Authorities reported 30% of those fatalities were alcohol related.

Judges and medical staff will be on standby to help during the "No Refusal" project.

Tennessee leaders hope to expand the enforcement to other counties and said motorists can expect to see the initiative again during the Labor Day holiday.
