NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Jordin Tootoo announced on Sunday evening he has reached a deal with the Detroit Red Wings.
The deal will reportedly pay forward Tootoo nearly $6 million over three years.
"It was kind of a whirlwind today. There were about four teams that were really interested and Detroit came over the top at the last minute. It's going to be a great opportunity for me," Tootoo told Nashville's News 2.
The Nashville Predators are set to play the Red Wings six times in the upcoming season, including their opening game.
"There's going to be some mixed emotion, but at the same time I have to do what's best for my hockey career and I thought this was the best opportunity," he said. "Nashville is always going to have a place in my heart, but at the end of the day it is a tough decision I had to make, but I am thoroughly excited to start a new chapter in my life."
The Nashville Predators drafted Tootoo in 2001.
The Predators' 2012-2013 season kicks off October 12.
