NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Despite the extreme temperatures, the Walking with the Stars 5K went on as planned Saturday morning.

The event, which raised money for Morning Star Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that helps domestic violence victims, kicked off at 8 a.m. at Centennial Park.

"The point of today is to raise awareness for what Morning Star does, as well as domestic violence," Executive Director John Pugh said.

Organizers told Nashville's News 2 with the hot temperatures, measures were in place to ensure the safety of participants.

"The bottom line is we have taken extra precautions. We have almost 500 bottles of water, we have let everyone know we are very much aware of the heat and conditions," Pugh said.

The money raised at the 5K will benefit the women and children's shelter.

In the past five years, the 16-bed shelter has provided over 21,000 nights of stay to domestic violence victims.

Volunteer opportunities are available.
