NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest early Friday morning after three men flagged him down on the side of the road.
Police told Nashville's News 2 the suspects stopped the victim around 1 a.m. on Joseph Avenue near Hancock Street in east Nashville.
They asked him for cigarettes and then shot him in the chest.
A motive wasn't known.
Officials urge citizens to take caution if ever approached by suspicious looking persons.
Captain Ken Walburn explained, "Obviously if somebody flags you over, or if they had seemed like they're asking for help, if it's not a well lit area or a safe area, the best thing to do is called the police department and let us know."
Following the shooting, the victim drove himself to the Z-Mart on the corner of Dickerson Pike and Hancock Street.
He was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries and is expected to be okay.
Anyone with information is urged to call Metro police or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
