Mosque members watch court, consider legal action

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The people most affected by a long-running court battle to stop construction of a Rutherford County mosque have no say in the case and the most to lose as it drags on.

Months of appeals lie ahead as mosque opponents battle the county in court.

Although the building is nearly finished, a judge has barred county officials from issuing a permit for it to be used. If that ruling is not overturned quickly, mosque officials say they may have no choice but to take legal action.

Muslim worshippers have been counting on moving in by Ramadan, which begins in late July.

The current Islamic center, in an office park, is too small already, and the number of worshippers swells during the Islamic holy month.
