NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A single vehicle accident early Wednesday morning claimed the life of a 64-year-old man in Madison.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 3500 block of Dickerson Pike, just north of Briley Parkway near Due West Avenue.

Metro police said Sammie Morris was traveling north on Dickerson Pike when, for reasons unknown, his pickup traveled across all lanes of oncoming traffic and struck a tree.

Morris had to be extricated from his pickup truck.  He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

At least one passing motorist witnessed the crash and was interviewed by police.

Family members told investigators that Morris lived in the immediate area.

Police said he did not take any evasive action prior to the collision indicating he may have been unconscious.

Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene.

Morris was wearing a seatbelt.

Dickerson Pike was shutdown in both directions for a few hours.  It was reopened just before 6 a.m.
