NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Vince Gill and Amy Grant will headline a concert Monday night to benefit a 19-year-old Nashville woman who suffered a massive stroke earlier this year.
The stroke on March 1 initially left Sophie Salveson with little-to-no movement on the right side of her body and major damage to the speech and comprehension center of her brain.
In the months since, Salveson has fought for recovery and every movement has been a victory.
After three months, she has finally learned to walk again but her communication and cognitive skills remain seriously affected.
She has a long road of struggle, recovery and rehabilitation ahead.
A graduate of Hume-Fogg High School, Salveson was studying at the Chicago Institute of the Arts when she suffered the stroke while running on a treadmill.
According to the American Stroke Association, stroke rates among young children and teens are skyrocketing, and a recent study showed that one in three ischemic stroke patients are only 15 to 34 years old.
Monday's concert, Sophie Shines – The Concert/Auction Event, will be held at 3rd & Lindsley at 6 p.m.
VIP tickets are sold out but general admission seats remain at $35. To purchase or to make a donation, visit SophieShines.com.
One hundred percent of all donations will go to the Sophia Salveson Trust Fund.
