Nashville eye surgeon develops healing contact lens

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Nashville eye surgeon is introducing new technology he says can do more than just help patients see, it can actually heal.

Dr. Ming Wang with the Wang Vision Institute has developed a procedure using amniotic membranes which clarify vision and reduce scar tissue.

Wang told Nashville's News 2, "Using amniotic membrane we create a contact lens and we cover the eye surface, recreate a fetus like environment to encourage [the] adult body to heal."

Sandra Perkins, a patient, responded well to the surgery.

"The cornea, which would not heal for over six months with all other kind of medications, with this, it has healed completely," Dr. Wang said.

Wang researched the project for 16 years before using it to treat a patient.

The amniotic sacs are donated by mothers after giving birth.
