CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
Clarksville police are asking for the public's assistance identifying a woman that bilked an 81-year-old man out of $400.
According to detectives, last Tuesday, the woman told the elderly man that she was a representative of the Clarksville Police Department and citing him for a motor vehicle violation.
"He was driving around the marina and he was getting tailgated. He said he drives [slowly] so he pulled over to let her go around," Detective Justin Bailey said. "She exited her vehicle, approached him, said she was a representative with the police department and he had a vehicle violation."
She said the violation would cost $600 but would cut him a break and take $400.
"He drove his vehicle and she followed him to the bank and he wrote a cashier's check out to the Clarksville Police Department and she said she was not an officer, it had to be in cash, so he went to another bank and pulled money out and gave her cash," Bailey continued.
According to Bailey, the suspect can not be charged with impersonating a police officer.
"She never said she was an officer and after he wrote a check to her for the Clarksville Police Department she said, ‘I am not an officer, you need to make it out to cash,'" he said.
Detective Bailey added police officers will never ask for or accept cash for any reason.
Anyone with information on the woman's identity is urged to call Clarksville detectives at 931-648-0656 or the police department's tips line at 931-645-8477.
