MANCHESTER, Tenn. -
An eight-year old boy is lucky to be alive after a fiery crash late Sunday afternoon in Coffee County.
Parker Jones was riding in the passenger seat of his mother's Toyota SUV when she drove off Gowen Road around 5 p.m. and hit a row of trees.
Amber Jones, 35, swerved back onto the road and her vehicle burst into flames. Jones was able to get out safely, but her son was trapped.
Jason Little, who was visiting family nearby, saw the crash and rushed over to help.
Neighbor, Kirk Rutland, was also outside mowing his yard when he heard the commotion.
"I saw the car mangled up. It looked like a single car accident. Somebody was yelling there were people inside and already fire was starting," Rutland told Nashville's News 2.
Rutland ran back to his house to get a fire extinguisher while Little tried to pry the passenger's side door open.
"I could tell the flames were starting to get inside the cab area, so I grabbed my little fire extinguisher and was trying to beat back the flames enough so he could get the boy the rest of the way out," said Rutland.
Nashville's News 2 spoke with Amber Jones' father, Dwight Bryan, who said his daughter and grandson were on their way to his home to celebrate Father's Day.
They were three miles away when the crash happened.
The child was transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital with a few deep cuts to his face and burns on one arm. His mother suffered a bump on her neck.
"They are lucky. It could have been a lot worse," he told Nashville's News 2.
The boy is listed in stable condition at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
