SMYRNA, Tenn. -
Two people were taken to the hospital following a serious wreck Friday morning after a Nissan Pathfinder rolled onto its side along Interstate 24 in Rutherford County near the Almaville Road exit.
The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. after a Toyota pickup truck blew a tire causing the Pathfinder to veer off the road, clip several signs and rollover.
The two inside the vehicle were trapped and rescue crews had to pry open both doors to rescue the occupants.
A witness told Nashville's News 2 he was following his aunt and cousin who were inside the SUV as they were on traveling to Middle Tennessee State University to register his cousin for school.
Both patients were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. One was taken via LifeFlight helicopter and the other was taken to the hospital via ground transportation.
The victim's conditions were not immediately known, though the witness said his aunt and cousin were talking to him before they went to the hospital.
The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured.
Lanes were shutdown while crews cleared the scene.
The interstate has since reopened.
