SPRING HILL, Tenn. -
A Mid-State mother saved her young son's life over the weekend after he fell into a family pool.
Brook Fitzgerald told Nashville's News 2 when she pulled her three-year-old son, Jamison, out of the water he was lifeless and blue.
The registered nurse said her toddler fell into the water when she took her eyes off of him for a short amount of time while she made him a sandwich.
Fitzgerald said she immediately jumped into "mom mode" and began performing CPR.
"At first it is surreal," she said. "This is not happening. I pull him out he is blue and pale and lifeless. I'm patting his back, hoping he will respond. He doesn't. I call 911, at the same time I'm giving him mouth to mouth, looking for an airway. I see his chest rises and falls. I start chest compressions. I tell them my son has drowned and I need an ambulance."
Moments later, the Maury County boy comes to life, crying and coughing up water.
"I am saying, ‘Come back to me. Come back to me,'" Fitzgerald said.
She continued, "In the back of my head I'm asking the Lord to please bring him back to me. He starts with a whine. Then a full blown cry, then I put him on his side and he is throwing up water. It is a wonderful sign, color returns automatically."
Fitzgerald said when her son begins to come to, she feels relief, however then begins to question things like ‘how long was he out?' and ‘would her son suffer from brain damage?'
"I asked him to tell me who I am. He says you are momma. That is when I took my first full breath for myself," she said.
Jamison, who just turned three-years-old on June 2, was rushed to an area hospital before he was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
The Fitzgerald's said their son has recovered.
Jamison's father, Jason, calls his wife a hero.
"She is my hero. I would have freaked out," he said. "It would have ended badly. She did that and saved him."
The family said they encourage every parent to learn CPR in the event of an emergency.
